The motto of today's World Oral Health Day is "Be Proud Of Your Mouth" - or in other words: Appreciate and care for your mouth!
Often underestimated, oral health is crucial to our general well-being and physical attractiveness and helps to prevent a number of health problems associated with poor oral health.
At schülke, we have been dealing with the topic of oral health and oral hygiene for a long time. With a few exciting facts about oral health and our schülke oral care product portfolio, we want to raise awareness about oral health and dental hygiene.
- Oral diseases are among the most common chronic diseases worldwide. They affect an estimated 3.5 billion people - almost one in two people in the world - and impact many aspects of life, from relationships and self-confidence, to school, work and the ability to interact with others (1).
- Poor dental health, for example, can contribute to tooth decay. An estimated 2.4 billion people worldwide suffer from cavities in their permanent teeth and around 510 million children suffer from cavities in their primary teeth (1,2).
- In addition, poor dental hygiene can be the cause of gingivitis and, in the long term, periodontitis. It is estimated that around 19% of the world's adult population is affected by severe periodontitis - equivalent to more than 1 billion cases worldwide (2,3).
- At-risk patients may also be more susceptible to more serious conditions such as endocarditis and respiratory infections. It is therefore recommended that oral cavity antisepsis is carried out as part of infection prevention, e.g. in dental practices and for patients in intensive care units (4,5).
