The benefits of preventive washing in helping reduce surgical site infections are well documented. However, to be fully effective, patients need to understand and fully engage with the pre-operative decontamination process.
Research has shown that an effective screening and decolonisation programme can reduce rates of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) by up to 60%. This strategy can also result in significant savings when compared to the cost of prevented infections [Jeans, 2018].
However, to be fully effective, patients need to understand and fully engage with the decontamination process. The new octenisan® app is designed to guide a patient through their surgery journey, including essential pre-operative decontamination steps using octenisan® wash lotion and octenisan® md nasal gel.
Guidance is personally tailored to the patient’s surgery date, hospital and octenisan® products. The aim is to help keep patients on track, with reminders about preparing for surgery and pre-operative decontamination. Sections include videos and advice about fasting, packing and preparing for surgery, as well as frequently asked questions.
The octenisan® app is free to download and is available for Android and Apple devices. It can easily found by searching ‘octenisan app’ in the app stores and by scanning a QR code available to NHS Trusts
Tom Crowe, Marketing Executive at schülke UK commented “knowing the benefits that preventive washing can have for patients and clinicians, we’re passionate about rolling out this app as quickly as possible to Trusts across the country. New patient focused videos, tailored pre-operative journeys and push reminders should help improve pre-operative decontamination compliance.”
