Behind the sustainability: Team Industrial Engineering

22.02.2024

schülke is one of the leading companies in terms of sustainability in its industry. We look back with pride on the year 2023, in which we successfully implemented the use of 100% green energy in our production facilities in Brazil, France and at the Norderstedt site, made progress in the development of more climate-friendly products, were awarded the Ecovadis Gold Medal and received validation of our climate targets by the SBTi (Science Based Targets initiative). The implementation of our sustainability agenda and the protection of the environment and climate form an important basis for our activities. But which teams contribute significantly to the successful realization of our sustainability projects and initiatives at schülke? Once per quarter, we present one of these teams and their exciting projects in our new series “Behind the sustainability”.

Team Industrial Engineering

It all starts with the industrial engineering team in the energy management department. The team is made up of three technical departments: The divisional engineers, waste water technology and supply technology. In the background, the team takes care of all media flows required for supply and disposal at the production facilities and office buildings.

The industrial engineering team always keeps an eye on possible optimization potential in the production facilities and processes, plant automation and wastewater treatment. This forms the perfect basis for driving forward energy optimization, as the team has an overview of the entire process flow and can carry out optimizations not only on the supply systems, but also directly on site in production.

The team has access to extensive data basis, such as energy monitoring with over 200 measuring points. If a process is in need of optimization, consumption is first recorded and compared with efficiency. The optimization is then implemented and checked for effectiveness and sustainability. In 2023, for example, around 1.12 GWh (- 13.8%) less electricity was consumed at the Norderstedt location than in 2022.
