Successful commitment to climate protection: Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) validates schülke's environmental targets

With a clear focus on further advancing its climate protection activities based on the latest climate science findings, schülke joined the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) in June 2022, thereby committing to meeting the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement. In March 2023, schülke submitted its specific targets to SBTi - the targets have now been successfully validated.

  • "By submitting the targets to the SBTi, schülke has set a strong example in the consistent implementation of its sustainability strategy. It shows that we are setting a good example in our industry and are committed to constantly setting new standards," says CEO Jan-Dirk Auris.
  • schülke's emission reduction targets have now been validated by the SBTi and published on their website on November 23, 2023.
  • The schülke targets are science-based and follow a concrete timetable: Starting from the base year 2021, reduce absolute greenhouse gas emissions in Scope 1 and 2 by 42% and for purchased goods and services in Scope 3 by 25% by 2030.

SBTi is a collaboration between the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the UN Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The initiative defines proven science-based procedures and evaluates corresponding targets of companies on an independent basis. Around 6,500 companies worldwide are currently working with SBTi.

The CO2-balance as a core element of the sustainability strategy

The submission of the schülke climate targets to SBTi was preceded by a comprehensive analysis of schülke's global ecological footprint for 2021: emissions in Scopes 1, 2 and 3 were recorded, evaluated and a baseline was established to track progress. For a better understanding: Scope 1 are the direct emissions caused, for example, by the combustion of fossil fuels in production or by other processes within the company itself. Scope 2 are indirect emissions that are generated, for example, through the purchase of energy or electricity. Finally, Scope 3 are indirect emissions within the value chain that are generated by upstream and downstream activities.

Based on theCO2 emissions of the base year 2021 and for all 3 scopes mentioned, schülke has developed concrete targets for reducing emissions by 2030, which have now been validated by SBTi. schülke CEO Jan-Dirk Auris on this milestone: "The fact that schülke's targets have now been recognized by SBTi is an outstanding achievement by the entire schülke workforce, which has been involved worldwide in collecting the data and developing the targets. Together, we are convinced that ecological sustainability is a central pillar of being a future-proof company today."

schülke's path to greater sustainability

As part of its commitment to its clear climate targets, schülke is continuously reducing its use of energy and resources with the help of modern technologies, further developing its product portfolio and making it more sustainable. Consistent quality and effectiveness of the products at the highest standard to ensure the safety of patients and healthcare professionals are a matter of course.

schülke's mission to take responsibility for current and future generations extends beyond its own company. "With reliable and sustainably produced products, we give our customers security in their purchasing decisions and also support them in their own efforts towards greater sustainability," says Jan-Dirk Auris.
